The U District, which is derived from the name “University District”, is where the main campus of the University of Washington (UW) is located. Two years after the area was annexed to Seattle, the UW moved in from downtown in 1893. The U District lies to the east of Interstate 5 on the north side of the Lake Washington Ship Canal. Prior to the development of the UW campus, the area has been inhabited for over 10,000 years since the end of the last glacial period. On Union Bay, an American Indian tribe called the Duwamish thrived in a prominent village – they were called the “People on the Inside”.
